Paul Merson praises Aston Villa's signing of goalkeeper Emi Martinez
Paul Merson has given his backing to Aston Villa over their signing of Emi Martinez.
The club recently sealed the transfer of the Argentine stopper from Arsenal for a reported fee of around £20 million (The Guardian).
The deal has been deemed as one that suits all parties, with Arsenal neeeding to raise funds for other transfer targets and Villa needing a replacement and also competition for the injured Tom Heaton.
Martinez proved himself with a string of excellent performances for the Gunners last term, deputising for the injured Bernd Leno during Project Restart.
The South American was solid between the sticks, and his addition to Villa’s squad has gone down well with Sky pundit Merson.
He told The Daily Star: “Villa have done some good business. They’ve done well to keep Jack Grealish. Fair play to him for signing his contract.
“And Emiliano Martinez is a great signing because £20m for a keeper this day and age is cheap and he was outstanding for Arsenal last season.”
TBR’s View – A good deal for Villa
Martinez’s form for Arsenal during Project Restart was remarkable.
He looked every inch Leno’s equal and if he can replicate those kinds of performances for Villa then it will be huge for Dean Smith.
A dependable goalkeeper can be worth a lot of points over the course of the season, and Martinez has proven himself to be just that.
£20 million is good business, especially given he is still only 28 and could potentially have many years at the top.
