Harry Kane’s future at Tottenham Hotspur has been in the news this week.

Kane told former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp, for Sky Sports, he could consider a Spurs exit if he ever felt the team was not progressing. Considering the struggles at Spurs this season, it appears that time might have come.

The Telegraph reported that the England captain could consider his future at Tottenham at the end of the season and that Spurs would reportedly demand a £150 million fee for his transfer.

It has led to plenty of pundits suggesting the time might be right for Kane to leave. One of those was former Arsenal midfielder, Paul Merson. The pundit wrote in his Sky Sports column that Kane may have to leave for a Premier League rival if he wants to break the league’s goalscoring record, currently held by Alan Shearer and win trophies.

But Merson also pointed out why it could be a difficult decision for Kane.

“It’s a hard one for Kane, because the grass is always greener. He plays every week at Tottenham; if he goes three games without scoring, he plays the fourth game. If he goes five games without scoring, he plays the sixth game.

“If he goes to another club, and he goes a few games without scoring, he might not play the next game. He has to weigh these types of things up.

“There is no doubt that at Tottenham, Kane has always been the first name on the team-sheet in recent years.”

He is the club’s main goal-scorer and is a genuine leader in the first-team picture. If he were, for example, to join Manchester City, that would mean challenging with the likes of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus for first-team football. Kane would not necessarily have an indispensable spot in the starting XI in that scenario.

So whilst Kane might be thinking of a Tottenham exit this summer, he will undoubtedly realise he may also have a fight on his hands to have his current status at another club.
