Paul Merson fears for Chelsea after selling central defender David Luiz to Arsenal as per his column for Sky Sports.
Merson feels Arsenal have signed the best ball-playing centre half at Stamford Bridge and that Frank Lampard could be in trouble after selling him.
He said: “Lampard has got to be careful. None of their defenders can play out from the back. If you’re asking them to start playing out from the back, they’re going to get beaten left, right and centre.
“It’s a dangerous, dangerous game. Kepa doesn’t kick anything long. Luiz was the best player on the ball by a million miles. Now all of a sudden you’ve got players who can’t play out, and teams will suffocate them.”
TBR’s View – Arsenal have got themselves exactly what they need
After sealing the signing of William Saliba to be the long-term solution at the back, Arsenal only needed a short-term fix – either a loan deal or an experienced player on a shorter contract.
Luiz is the latter, but has the leadership, medals and confidence that Arsenal need at the back to marshall their younger faces this season.
As for Chelsea, they looked rudderless on Sunday at Old Trafford, although they did suffer heavy away defeats with Luiz in the side as well last season.
