Arsenal legend and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that Kieran Tierney deserves to be given the Gunners captaincy.
The North Londoners are going through a tough time at present, sitting in the lower reaches of the Premier League table and struggling to fashion chances, never mind get results.
Arsenal appear to be suffering from a lack of leadership on the pitch, with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang recently saying he’s not the most vocal of people.
The Gunners also suffered in David Luiz’s absence during the losses to Tottenham and Burnley, while Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Magalhaes’ recent dismissals also suggest an overall lack of discipline within the squad.
Merson believes Tierney has been Arsenal’s most consistent performer this season and should be handed the armband.
“I would give it to Tierney as he’d run through a brick wall for you,” he told Sky Sports.
“He’s the one player I look at who gives everything, and I’d give him the captaincy. There’s a way of showing how much you care, and the relationship he is building with Bukayo Saka down the left looks decent.”
Amid a sea of mediocrity, Tierney has been one of Arsenal’s brighter players this term, but alongside shining on the pitch, he’s also clearly leadership material, and as such, Merson is making a good call.
Perhaps taking the armband off Aubameyang would be good for him too, as he could then focus solely on getting goals – there’s certainly plenty for Mikel Arteta to ponder.
