Paul Merson has told The Debate on Sky Sports (broadcast on 7/10; 22:35) that the 3-0 defeat to Brighton was the worst performance he can remember seeing from Tottenham Hotspur.

Mauricio Pochettino goes into the international break with plenty to ponder. Spurs followed up their 7-2 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich with a heavy loss at the Amex Stadium.

Two goals from Aaron Connelly helped the Seagulls to a 3-0 victory. It has left many questioning what the future looks like for Spurs and Pochettino given that they were in the Champions League final just a few months ago.

And Merson made a big claim as he discussed the defeat and admitted that he is saddened by what is happening at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium right now.

“There’s ways of losing football matches. The way they lost against Bayern Munich, I didn’t think was that bad. It could have gone the other way,” he told Sky Sports. “That was as bad as I’ve ever seen Tottenham the other day. I don’t think it can get worse than that for Tottenham.

“When they went 1-0 down, and I know the goalkeeper had a bad injury and it was a bad mistake and there’s two minutes gone, when the camera went on everybody, you’d have thought it was the last kick of the game and had just lost. There was no come on, get up and fight. It was like they were beaten already. I find it pretty sad really.”

Spurs fans will certainly be hoping that the international break proves to be the catalyst for a turnaround. The Tottenham players have to wait a fortnight to put things right. And in the meantime, they have to deal with the criticism coming their way.

Tottenham are clearly good enough to turn their fortunes around completely. But this past week has certainly been a warning that big changes are needed over the coming months if Spurs want to avoid heading back to somewhere near where they started when Pochettino took over.
