Tottenham Hotspur take on Manchester City in the Premier League next.

Both Spurs and City have had a terrible season. The North Londoners are 12th in the Premier League table right now, while the defending champions are currently fourth, 20 points below the summit.

However, Spurs seem to have turned a corner recently. They have won three games in a row in the league for the first time this season and are looking good.

That will give them the confidence against Pep Guardiola’s side on Wednesday night.

Paul Merson predicts Tottenham vs Manchester City result

Guardiola has never had to go through anything like this season in his entire managerial career.

Manchester City have won just 13 of their first 26 games in the Premier League this term, and they’ve already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and the Champions League.

The FA Cup is their only chance of silverware this season and they may well go on to win it. But that won’t change the fact that this has been a terrible campaign.

Tottenham’s season, on the other hand, has been worse for the large part, but Paul Merson still believes that Spurs will beat Manchester City on Wednesday.

He wrote on Sportskeeda: “I expect Tottenham to trouble City. If Erling Haaland isn’t fit and it becomes an end-to-end game, I have to back Spurs for the win. City have no firepower, they don’t look like scoring at all! The new signings have not worked for them either.

“City can still finish in the top four, but they have some tricky fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Brighton. If they fail to beat Spurs, they could be playing catch up to other teams by the time they face these sides and that’s never a good thing.

“Tottenham’s front three have goals in them and with Son Heung-min playing with a lot of confidence, Spurs will definitely trouble City.”

Merson’s prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Manchester City

Manchester City’s last five results at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham have consistently troubled Manchester City over the last few years.

Even when Guardiola’s men were at the peak of their powers and destroying everyone, they struggled against Spurs – both home and away.

Here’s what happened in their last five visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium:

DateResult
October 30, 2024Tottenham 2-1 Manchester City
May 14, 2024Tottenham 0-2 Manchester City
January 26, 2024Tottenham 0-1 Manchester City
December 3, 2023Tottenham 3-3 Manchester City
February 5, 2023Tottenham 1-0 Manchester City
(Correct as of February 25. 2025)

The two sides have won two games each and drawn the other in their last five meetings at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But, Spurs have already beaten City on two occasions this season – 2-1 in the Carabao Cup and a memorable 4-0 victory at the Etihad in the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou would love nothing more than a repeat of the latter on Wednesday night.
