Paul Merson has delivered a worrying verdict on Tottenham

Paul Merson feels that Tottenham won’t win silverware anytime soon and is concerned about the impact of their new signings.

Spurs have been heavily criticised this week following their exit from the Carabao Cup third round, as they lost to League Two side Colchester United on penalties.

Mauricio Pochettino has still failed to win a trophy with the North London club despite transforming them into a regular top four side in the Premier League.

They lost out in the Champions League final to Liverpool last season and many feel they should have targeted a domestic cup this term.

Sky Sports pundit Merson also has concerned about their new arrivals, who were meant to improve the squad.

Tanguy Ndombele looked impressive in the opening weeks following his arrival from Lyon, but has had injury trouble and seen his form dip since.

Meanwhile, Giovani Lo Celso (loan) and Ryan Sessegnon have also struggled with injury since they joined in the summer.

Pochettino has had to rely on the same core group of players, but some are entering the final year of their contracts and there is much discussion about them.

“They don’t look like winning anything at the moment,” Merson wrote in the Daily Star.

“You look at their team and Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen won’t be around for long.

“Danny Rose is the best left back in the country at the moment but he might still go as well. And the new players are not pulling up any trees. I worry for Tottenham.”

TBR’s View:

After a string of negative results, there is a real cloud of negativity around the club and they could do with a result at home to Southampton this weekend to release some of that.

There is understandably concern about some of the players in the squad and where their futures lie, but it’s too soon to write off their new faces.

Ndombele has shown in patches he can be a hit in English football and the powerful central midfielder needs time to regain his form.

Sessegnon is yet to kick a ball in a Spurs shirt, but is an exciting young talent that supporters are excited to see.
