Paul Merson believes that Manuel Pellegrini is “fortunate” his West Ham side scored two consolation goals in their defeat at the weekend, as he feels his job is hanging by a thread.

The Hammers were beaten 3-2 at home by rivals Tottenham and two late goals gave them some respect on the scoreline.

Pellegrini’s team were outplayed for the large majority of the contest before their comeback and their form is shocking.

They have just two points from their last seven league games and that has seen them drop down to 17th in the table.

According to the Mirror, West Ham are considering the future of their manager following a concerning run of results.

The report explains that Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder, Chris Hughton and Rafael Benitez are being considered as potential candidates if they need a replacement at the London Stadium.

Sky Sports pundit Merson feels that Pellegrini was perhaps on the brink of losing his job at the weekend at Spurs until his team’s late comeback.

“Pellegrini is quite fortunate with the two goals West Ham scored at the end against Tottenham, because if that had ended 4-0 or 5-0, I don’t see how he could have stayed on,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“It’s very easy to play when you’re losing, the shackles are off. You’ve got to be playing at 0-0.

“I watched them against Burnley (a 3-0 defeat) and he picked the wrong team with Pablo Fornals. He’s a good player but he’s not a Burnley away player. Newcastle didn’t look like they would score for toffee on Monday at Aston Villa, but they scored three times at West Ham.”

TBR’s View:

It seems like there are a number of Premier League managers under pressure right now after the the international break and West Ham boss Pellegrini should be feeling the heat.

After building a squad in his image, the team were expected to kick on during their second season the Chilean at the helm.

But they are only three points above the relegation places as it stands and don’t look like improving anytime soon.

West Ham travel to Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next two games, which is why it may get worse before it gets better.
