Paul Merson explains why he fears Premier League relegation for Leeds

Paul Merson has admitted that he’s worried for Leeds United going into the new 2020/21 season and feels they could have a real fight on to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The Whites are currently preparing for the top-flight campaign, as they charged towards to the Championship title last season and deservedly clinched promotion.

With popular manager Marcelo Bielsa in charge, they did so by implementing a high press relentless style that often saw them dominate the ball and run others teams into the ground.

Sky Sports pundit Merson insists that the same kind of approach won’t be nearly as effective against better opponents in the Premier League.

He also gave a major transfer warning to Leeds that they must sign a forward, as he claims they need a goalscorer in their squad just like newly-promoted side Fulham have with Aleksandar Mitrovic.

“It’s Leeds I worry about if they don’t sign a striker. I don’t see how they survive. I don’t see Patrick Bamford scoring the goals Mitrovic will,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“I hope Leeds fans don’t think they will do a Sheffield United because I don’t see it. When you try to press like they do, top players will pop the ball around you.

“If Leeds can get a top quality forward, they might be okay. But that’s where Fulham have such an advantage.”

TBR’s View:

Bamford may not be Premier League proven or a natural goalscorer, but he fit the Bielsa system perfectly to suggest he can play a key role next season and he also managed 16 goals in the title-winning campaign in the Championship.

There is no doubt the Yorkshire giants need to sign another striker to compete for the number nine position and someone with experience would be ideal, but it would be wrong

Meanwhile, people are doubting that Leeds can enforce their playing style on teams in the Premier League and it looks like we will find out because Bielsa is someone that firmly believes in his techniques.
