Paul Merson discloses what he finds ‘insane’ about Arsenal right now

Arsenal take on Fulham in a London derby this Saturday at Craven Cottage, where Mikel Arteta has the chance to bury the hatchet from last season.

The Gunners only drew 1-1 in this fixture last term to leave themselves third and six points behind Liverpool, their fifth draw after 15 games of that 2024/25 campaign. That lack of momentum ultimately saw the Reds win the Premier League title by ten points.

Arsenal can potentially move four points ahead of Liverpool with a win at Fulham this time around – and Paul Merson is backing his old side to get all three points, having noticed something “insane” about the squad.

Paul Merson makes bold title claim about “insane” Arsenal if Mikel Arteta manages to defeat Marco Silva

The man who made 423 appearances for Arsenal actually told Sportskeeda that he feels the Gunners will “walk” their way to the Premier League title if they beat Fulham.

One of the main reasons for this comment was that Merson believes Arteta can now boast “insane” squad depth – with two “good players” available for each position.

The 57-year-old said: “If you’re Arsenal, these are the games that are going to win you the league. I’ve seen them slipping up in games like these too many times.

“Three points in this game will send a strong message to their rivals about them learning from the mistakes of the past. I actually think that if Arsenal win this game, they will walk the league title! It’s an unbelievable squad and the depth is insane. Arsenal have two good players for every position on the pitch. When you compare it to Liverpool, if Virgil van Dijk gets injured, goodnight! Ryan Gravenberch injured? Goodnight! Even Mo Salah, again goodnight.”

Merson ended his segment by backing Arsenal for a 2-0 win over Fulham.

Mikel Arteta already knows what he needs to do to beat Fulham

Arteta recognised his side’s shortcomings from that aforementioned 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage last season, praising Fulham for the manner in which they stifled the Gunners.

Back in March, the Spaniard said: “They are always a tough opposition. They are well coached and they have been together for many years. They have great organisation and individual quality. They have a very clear identity and idea of how to approach the game, so we have to be very good to beat them.

“We had a lot of dominance in the last game against them (1-1 draw in December) but they were very clinical. They managed to score the goal and sat back and reduced the spaces.”

Silva also admires Arteta and praised the Arsenal boss for always being respectful.

The Fulham manager said in December 2024: “You know how Mikel and the Arsenal team respect everybody in this competition, they know that it’s really tough to play and win games at this level.”

It will be a litmus test for Arsenal after recent struggles at Craven Cottage, where they have not reigned supreme in either of the last two seasons.

If Arteta can finally secure three points in west London against Fulham, Merson could be right – perhaps Arsenal will run away with the title.
