Everton remain in the race for the Premier League’s top four, but it’s proving a difficult battle, given the Toffees are currently eighth in the table.
Carlo Ancelotti’s charges began the season brightly but their form has dropped off in recent weeks, picking up just one point from their last three games.
Manchester City are obviously certainties for the top four, while Manchester United are nine points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea so they’re very likely to qualify for the Champions League.
But things are much more open between third and eighth, with just nine points separating Leicester City, West Ham, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and the two Merseyside clubs.
Merson wasn’t optimistic on the subject of Everton, however, telling Sky Sports: “What a bad result for Everton on Monday.
“They missed far too many chances, and, in the end, it was a really poor result.
“They weren’t clinical enough and when you are in that position, you have to stick the ball in the back of the net.
“That’s now three league games without a win and their chances are slipping away quickly. But that’s how quickly things can change.
“They were looking good and they also had some decent fixtures, but at the moment, I just can’t see where the next win is coming from.
“I don’t give them a chance of sneaking into the top four.”
Everton will play on Monday night for the second week in a row as they head to Brighton & Hove Albion for a 8:15pm kickoff.
