Paul Merson has predicted that Tottenham don’t stand a chance of finishing in the top four of the Premier League this season.
After an early exit from the Europa League, Spurs’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League rests solely on whether they can reach the top four.
Jose Mourinho’s side are sixth in the league standings just three points off the pace, but their recent 2-2 draw with Newcastle United highlighted the kind of inconsistency that’s existed throughout their campaign.
Sky Sports pundit Merson has made it clear he can’t see Spurs ending up in the top four positions.
He’s predicted that Liverpool and Leicester City will finish in the top four alongside the two Manchester clubs.
“I don’t give Tottenham any chance of reaching the top four at all,” he told Sky Sports.
“I just can’t see how they force their way in. They are seven points behind Leicester at the moment and that’s a lot of points at this stage of the season. Too many points really when they’ve got Man Utd, Everton, Leeds and Leicester to play.
“It’s too much for Spurs.”
If Spurs perform at their best, they are capable of beating anyone on their day.
Unfortunately, they are too vulnerable defensively and can really struggle when their top players are not at their very best.
It’s usual for teams to rely on certain individuals, but collectively the side needs to find a way of grinding out results when they’re not playing well and winning ugly.
This weekend’s home fixture against Manchester United is going to be a big indication as to whether they can pull themselves back into the top four.
