Paul Merson compares reported Arsenal target with Ian Wright

Paul Merson has made a comparison between reported Arsenal target Ivan Toney and Gunners legend Ian Wright.

Toney, 24, is a centre-forward that is currently dazzling in the Championship with Brentford.

The English frontman has remarkably scored 25 goals in just 33 league games so far this campaign, as well as providing nine assists.

He was playing League One football in the 2019/20 campaign with Peterborough United, but has been sensational since his summer switch to Brentford and as a result is being linked with Premier League clubs.

Football London has claimed that Brentford only plan on selling Toney this summer if they don’t earn promotion – and if they receive a £30million transfer sum.

The report explains that there is interest from Premier League clubs Arsenal and West Ham in his signature, with both “increasingly keen” in him.

Merson, who was writing about how Toney would be an ideal transfer target for Brighton, has waxed lyrical about the player’s qualities.

He’s even compared him to Wright, who is Arsenal’s second highest goalscorer of all time with 185 goals.

“He’s a natural goalscorer who is desperate to score,” Merson wrote in the Daily Star.

“Toney reminds me of Ian Wright. His movement, the way he enjoys himself, and he can scores all kinds of goals too.

‘Wrighty was someone who, even if you’ve won 4-0, would come off the pitch with the hump if he hadn’t scored himself.

TBR’s View:

Regardless of which club, Toney will surely be playing in the top-flight next season and he’s enjoying a huge rise in the past couple of years.

He’ll be looking to smash the 30-goal barrier this season and recent history shows players from the lower league can make big impact when given a chance in the Premier League.

Arsenal need a couple of extra additions to their squad next season if they have realistic aims of competing for the Champions League positions again, like a club their size should be doing, but it would be a colossal step up for Toney if he ended up at the Emirates Stadium.
