Paul Merson has told Sky Sports News (Monday, 2.45pm) that Chelsea midfielder Jorginho would have been a “great signing” for Arsenal, amid reported interest that the Gunners were considering a shock move for the Italian ace.

Jorginho, 28, is a crucial member of the Chelsea side and has even captained the Blues in two of his four league and cup appearances this season. On Saturday, he scored from the penalty spot twice in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Sky Sports claimed over the weekend that Arsenal were interested in raiding Chelsea for Jorginho and could move for the ex-Napoli man before Monday’s 11pm deadline. But with less than six hours to go, it looks unlikely a move will materialise.

Indeed, reports state that Arsenal have made a late move to sign Thomas Partey – leaving a move for Jorginho even more unlikely. Arsenal icon Merson reacted, when asked if Jorginho would be a good signing for Mikel Artet’s men.

“It would’ve been a great signing for Arsenal, with the way we play out from the back, he is so comfortable and calm on the ball,” Merson said. “I’m a big fan of Jorginho’s. He would have been a great signing for Arsenal and a massive loss for Chelsea.”

TBR’s view – Jorginho is too crucial to Chelsea

A move never had a chance. Yes, Arsenal might have been admirers of £50million (Sky Sports) signing Jorginho and yes, Arsenal and Chelsea have done business – Olivier Giroud, David Luiz, Willian are recent examples between the two sides.

But Jorginho is one of the first names on Chelsea’s team sheet – and is preparing for a Champions League campaign with the Blues, while Arsenal are only in the Europa League. There was never any chance of such a deal going through.
