Paul Merson claims Leeds need to sign a proven centre-forward

Paul Merson has claimed that Leeds United need to sign some players ahead of their return to the Premier League and picked out the forward position as an area they need to address.

The Whites have ended their 16-year exile from the Premier League by winning the Championship title this season and they are now preparing for life back in the top-tier, with a quick turnaround before the new season starts on 12 September.

Marcelo Bielsa’s team clinched automatic promotion by playing an attractive brand of football that is on the front foot and they have largely dominated possession against teams in the Championship.

Sky Sports pundit Merson is delighted to see the Yorkshire giants back in the top-flight, but suggest they need to try sign a proven striker at Elland Road during the upcoming transfer window.

“Leeds will have a right go and I think they will do well, but Bielsa will have to sign some new players. They need a striker who can score goals at that level,” Merson told the Daily Star.

TBR’s View:

Despite Patrick Bamford playing a crucial role in promotion this season with his 16 Leeds goals across all competitions, it’s clear that more options are required ahead of next year as the squad looks short at striker.

Bamford, 26, has a point to prove on his return to the Premier League and will be hoping to lead the frontline, but he will be expecting new arrivals during the summer.

Leeds have had players chipping in with goals from all over the park, but Bamford was the only individual to reach double figures and that could be a problem next season.

Someone that is guaranteed to hit the ground running with goals in the Premier League would be ideal for Leeds, but there aren’t too many players like that around.
