Paul Merson claims Arsenal attacker Willian looks lost right now

Paul Merson has given a critical assessment of Arsenal star Willian, who he claims “looks lost” at the Emirates Stadium right now.

The Brazilian winger signed in the summer for the Gunners, leaving London rivals Chelsea behind after a seven-year stint with them.

He was available on a free transfer after Chelsea decided against renewing his contract and Arsenal handed him a three-year deal, reportedly worth £220,000-a-week (Daily Mail).

Willian made a great first impression with two assists on the opening day of the Premier League season in a win against Fulham, but he’s had no goal involvements since in his next nine Arsenal appearances.

The 32-year-old has started in all but one of the league games so far to show the faith in him from manager Mikel Arteta, but his end product has been missing.

Sky Sports pundit believes that the North London club need to try get more from Willian:

“I think I’m seeing things at the moment. Willian was unbelievable at Chelsea last year. For me, he was probably one of the best Chelsea players. He was phenomenal – an outstanding talent. He has gone to Arsenal and he looks lost. They have got to get him performing,” Merson told Sky Sports.

TBR’s View:

Willian certainly hasn’t had the start to life at Arsenal he may have hoped and he can have no complaints if he’s axed from the line-up this weekend against Leeds United.

The South American speedster can be influential on his day and he proved that at Chelsea, but he’s one of several attackers that have found it difficult so far this season at the Emirates.

Arteta should consider giving wide man Nicolas Pepe his chance with a start in the Premier League, but there is also the Europa League competition still available which could be an ideal platform to try help Willian regain some form.
