Paul Merson has claimed that Tottenham’s Harry Kane is someone that doesn’t look at his best right now, which is a surprise considering he’s one of the few players to keep his standards up during a difficult period.
Spurs are currently experiencing a tough time that was highlighted in midweek by the 7-2 defeat at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stages.
There are a number of individuals that have seen their levels drop drastically for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and they are under the spotlight to bounce back against Brighton on Saturday in the Premier League.
But Kane has seven goals in nine games across all competitions this season and appears to be someone that is still delivering.
Merson though has his doubts over the 26-year-old and feels that his overall game in terms of linking up play is not what it can be.
“Harry Kane looks like he’s struggling though. That might sound strange as he’s still scoring goals. But he doesn’t look right,” Merson wrote in the Daily Star.
“Usually even when he doesn’t score, he brings a lot else to the game. He can fail to score in a game but still be man of the match. Not many strikers can do that.
“But right now, he looks a bit lost. He’s often been a big provider for his team-mates but I don’t see that much from him right now.”
Kane’s criticism is slightly bizarre, as he has tried to drop deep to help out during tough times for Spurs and it’s up to his teammates to pull their sleeves up.
The striker can be pleased with his individual start to the campaign and he’s continued to do what top-class players do.
There is of course always room for improvement and the England captain could be scoring even more goals if his teammates were on their A-game.
Pochettino’s team travel to Brighton on Saturday afternoon and it would be no surprise to see Kane put them to the sword.
