Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson says Tottenham should launch a January bid for Danny Ings after he put them to the sword yesterday.
Ings netted Southampton’s goal as they saw off Spurs 1-0 at St Mary’s and Merson, on Sky Sports’ News Soccer Special at 5:16pm, 01/01, said they should swoop.
He said: “If I was Tottenham I’d be going for Ings in this window. He suits and plays the Tottenham way. He has a great brain, he is clever, he comes off people. He is a proper footballer. Everything he did today was proper. His goal was outstanding. A bit like Paul Gascoigne against Scotland.
“Everything he did. He ticks the boxes for Tottenham. Not just the goals but his all-round game. He is a proper footballer. He’s got a clever brain and he is always one step ahead. He knows what he is doing before he gets the ball.”

TBR’s View – Tottenham’s age-old problem of finding a backup for Kane
Tottenham have struggled to find a backup striker for Harry Kane ever since he broke into the first team.
Ings would get Champions League football at Tottenham but would also be very much second fiddle. He left Liverpool to get games and he’s flying with Southampton now he’s got them.
His reported (Spotrac) £75,000-a-week wages would be affordable for Tottenham if they could convince Ings to swap the relegation battle for the chase for European football.
But surely Southampton are rejecting all advances this month; their survival hopes rest squarely on Ings’ shoulders.
