Paul Merson has claimed that new Everton signing James Rodriguez could turn out being a “game-changer” for the Merseyside club, depending on if he can rediscover his best form or not.

The Toffees signed the 29-year-old attacking midfielder this summer from Real Madrid and he will hope to make his debut at the weekend in the Premier League against Tottenham.

He’s a high-profile signing that won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup with Colombia and on his day is a special talent.

The left-footer prefers to play in a number 10 attacking role behind the striker and he’s now going try test himself in the Premier League for the first time.

Despite the fact he had a disappointing individual season last year, he’s shown he can be a goal threat and it will be no surprise to see him light up Goodison Park.

“James Rodriguez is a wait and see signing for Everton. Rodriguez, if he catches fire, could be a game-changer. But it hasn’t worked out for him for the last couple of years so we’ll have to wait and see,” Merson wrote in the Daily Star.

TBR’s View:

Madrid decided to offload Rodriguez after he fell out of favour with them, but he scored 37 goals and supplied 42 assists in just 125 appearances for the Spanish club.

He also enjoyed a decent two-year loan spell at Bayern Munich, scoring 15 goals and managing 20 assists in 67 games.

The Colombian certainly has the ability to hit the ground running in the Premier League and does bring an X-factor to their side, but it’s up to manager Carlo Ancelotti to try get the best out of him.
