Paul Merson believes 22-year-old Tottenham player could soon be dropped

Paul Merson has shared which Tottenham Hotspur player he expects to lose their place in the starting lineup once Heung-min Son is back from international duty.

Timo Werner has started both of Spurs’ games since arriving on a surprise loan deal earlier in the January transfer window.

Werner provided an assist in the draw against Manchester United. But he was unable to make a significant impact in the FA Cup tie with Manchester City.

Paul Merson thinks Timo Werner will keep place ahead of Brennan Johnson

Brennan Johnson has also started both of those games. The Welshman has taken a little while to get going following his arrival in the summer. But he has shown glimpses of his quality since signing from Nottingham Forest.

Of course, Tottenham have had to deal with the last three games without their captain. Heung-min Son has been away at the Asian Cup with South Korea. And he could potentially be missing until mid-February.

Son will almost certainly go straight back into the side if he is fit upon his return. And speaking to Sportskeeda, Paul Merson suggested who he expects to make way for the skipper.

“There’s been a lot of talk about Spurs’ frontline in the absence of Son Heung-min, but between Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson, I think the latter is more likely to lose his place when the South Korean returns from the Asian Cup. Werner has had some hard games since he joined the club earlier this month, so we have to wait to judge him,” he said.

Spurs need to learn if loanee has long-term future in North London

Merson is right that there is an element of the unknown when it comes to Werner. Werner played well against Old Trafford without stealing the show. And Tottenham were poor against Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Johnson’s time as a prominent player in Ange Postecoglou’s side will surely come. But it is important that Spurs see what Werner will bring to the table while he is on loan in North London.
