Paul Merson and Chris Sutton predict the result of Tottenham vs Newcastle with ‘great game’ expected

Tottenham face Newcastle United this weekend in what could be described as a must-win game for Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou’s job appears to be safe for now, but with Tottenham sitting eleventh in the table after half a season, questions have to be asked of the Australian, and another loss here would surely pile the pressure on.

Newcastle come into this game in great form having won five matches in a row, while Spurs have won just one of their last five league games.

The form guide suggests that Newcastle are favourites to win this game, but, that said, as their 4-0 win at the Etihad showed this season, you can never write Tottenham off.

Writing in their respective columns for SportsKeeda and the BBC, Paul Merson and Chris Sutton have both now predicted how this game is going to go.

Tottenham vs Newcastle predictions from Paul Merson and Chris Sutton

Merson and Sutton shared their verdicts on how this game will go.

The two pundits both reckon that Newcastle will win this match, with Merson predicting a 3-1 Newcastle win and Sutton tipping a 2-1 victory for the Magpies.

Paul Merson has enjoyed watching Newcastle recently. In fact, Merson has urged Arsenal to sign Alexander Isak after his incredible recent form.

“With the way both teams are playing, I have to go with a Newcastle win here. I know Manchester United aren’t great, but I thought Newcastle were brilliant in that 2-0 win. They are flying at the moment and I don’t expect this game to be any different,” Merson wrote.

“When you look at Tottenham, they are still in the running to win a trophy. I know that some sort of silverware will be a huge relief for their fans. However, they look a million miles away from finishing in the top four and that’s a problem. They are 11 points behind Chelsea and all the six teams, including Newcastle, between them and the Blues have all looked better.”

“Newcastle’s form is incredible, with five wins on the spin in all competitions. They have scored 16 goals in those games, with only one conceded,” Sutton said.

“Tottenham, in contrast, are on a poor run of results – although they did not perform badly in their defeat by Nottingham Forest or in their draw with Wolves last time out.

This is going to be a great game and, while I think Spurs will score, I just can’t go against Newcastle at the moment.

“Eddie Howe’s side have got goals in them and it is not just Alexander Isak who is a threat – Jacob Murphy is playing really well and their midfield of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton looks very strong.”

Tottenham’s recent record vs Newcastle

This is a fixture that Tottenham may well be dreading.

Indeed, Tottenham’s recent record against Newcastle makes for horrific reading, and there have been some very embarrassing results for Spurs as of late between these two sides.

Tottenham lost 6-1 to Newcastle a couple of seasons ago, a result that caused interim manager, Cristian Stellini to lose his job.

Meanwhile, Newcastle beat Spurs 4-0 last season, with Micky van de Ven receiving criticism after the game due to his two costly mistakes.

This is a game that has really defined recent eras at Spurs, with last season’s match marking the beginning of Tottenham’s downfall last term, and the match in 2022/23 proving to be decisive too.

Who knows? If Tottenham are on the wrong end of another embarrassing result here, perhaps that could spell the end of Ange Postecoglou’s reign as Spurs’ manager.
