Paul Gascoigne impressed by Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff

Paul Gascoigne has admitted that he’s a big admirer of Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff and feels he may even have a chance of breaking into the England squad under Gareth Southgate.

The 21-year-old has come through the academy ranks at St James’ Park and made a big impression in the first-team during 2019.

Longstaff made his breakthrough into the Newcastle senior team in the second half of last season and was a regular under ex-boss Rafael Benitez before a knee injury ruled him out.

The central midfielder is now back to full fitness and is a promising young star in the top-flight.

He’s become a key player in the centre of the park with his energy and defensive cover, while new manager Steve Bruce appears to have taken a shine to him too.

Ex-England and Newcastle midfielder Gascoigne claims he’s impressed by the all-round quality Longstaff has in his game.

“He (Longstaff) looks like a great young player coming through. I like the way he plays – he never stops running, he can pick a pass as well,” Gascoigne told the Chronicle.

“Gareth Southgate will pick the young players and so Sean’s got a chance. I like the way England are playing now, they’re playing some good football and it’s a pleasure to see what Gareth’s done.”

Longstaff should take Gascoigne’s comments with immense pride and he is clearly doing a brilliant job in the Newcastle midfield.

He’s already turning into one of the most consistent performers in the team and aged 21 he will only keep getting better.

The midfielder offers plenty to the Magpies both offensively and defensively, which is why he has to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

His injury happened at a poor time last season and could have threatened to derail him, but he’s bounced back and it looks like he’s hardly been away.

Gascoigne was speaking to promote Premier Sports’ coverage of the Serie A. Premier Sports will screen up to six live Serie A matches each week including Juventus v Napoli and Lazio v Roma this weekend. See for details of a Special Serie A offer.
