Paul Gascoigne has told Football London that he believes a lack of cover for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane could be the difference when it comes to keeping pace with Liverpool and Manchester City.
Spurs waved goodbye to Vincent Janssen who ended his Tottenham nightmare in the summer by moving to Mexican outfit Monterrey, while Fernando Llorente left the club at the end of his contract.
Llorente remains a free agent and there has been some suggestion that Spurs could look to bring him back, but Guillem Balague has claimed on Twitter that Spurs will not bring Llorente back – with Inter, Napoli and Manchester United more likely.
It leaves Mauricio Pochettino with just Kane up front as an option, while Troy Parrott is yet to even make his debut for the club. Gascoigne believes a lack of depth in the final third will see Liverpool and Manchester City continue to dominate.

“I have seen the players in Spurs academy and they have some unbelievable players coming through,” Gascoigne said. “But the big question is going to be what happens if Harry Kane gets injured? Who is going to replace him?
“Man City have got players to replace every position on the field. Tottenham don’t. Mauricio Pochettino needs to buy again in the next window and get a couple of players in.”
TBR’s view – Gascoigne hits nail on the head, worrying times for Spurs
To come through the transfer window with only one, recognised centre-forward is surely unforgivable. Manchester City have Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero, while Liverpool boast Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi.
Spurs needed a striker and with 25-year-old Kane renowned for his troublesome ankle injuries, there will surely be a point in the campaign where Spurs need a number nine. But it looks as though wingers Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura will have to replace him.
Gascoigne was speaking to promote Premier Sports’ coverage of the Serie A. Premier Sports will screen up to six live Serie A matches each week including Juventus v Napoli and Lazio v Roma this weekend. See http://premiersports.com for details of a Special Serie A offer.
