Patrick Vieira gives verdict on Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta

Patrick Vieira has told Ian Wright on Adidas’ YouTube channel that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reinvigorated a previously beleaguered Arsenal squad, and reckons the players are behind the Spanish boss.

Since taking over the reigns from interim manager Freddie Ljungberg in the final days of 2019, Arteta has since sat in the dugout for 15 league and cup matches as Arsenal gaffer – and has seen his side lose just two matches.

During the search for Unai Emery’s replacement, Nice manager Vieira, 43, was linked with a return to the Emirates. Indeed, French outlet Nice-Matin claimed the Arsenal board had made Vieira their favourite to become the new permanent manager.

However, Vieira has since remained at Nice and as a potential future Arsenal manager, commented on the initial impact made by Arteta – who is in his first managerial role as Gunners gaffer, but has worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Man City.

“Yes I’ve been watching Arsenal, once a Gunner always a Gunner,” Vieira said. “What is interesting with Arteta, is that he has brought the energy back. The players are playing for the club and the manager. It is really important.”

TBR’s view – What does Arteta need to take Arsenal back into Europe?

A late push for the Europa League is a possibility this season, but Arteta needs his a very strong window if he is to boast a squad capable of finishing in the top four of the Premier League – and qualifying for the Champions League.

Sorting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future, bringing in a steely central midfielder – such as Thomas Partey, a replacement for Mesut Ozil and two central defenders that can replace the faltering David Luiz and Sokratis is obvious.

A new winger on the other side of Arsenal’s starting eleven to Nicolas Pepe and even a new right-back should also be considered. Arteta needs to stamp his authority this summer if he is to have any chance of Champions League football.
