Patrick Bamford has told the Leeds United podcast about the hilarious prank he and teammate Kalvin Phillips pulled on Ben White last season, while the Brighton star was on loan at Elland Road – joking “it’s probably why he didn’t come back”.

White, 23, was arguably the club’s best player last season as he played every one of the club’s 49 games in all competitions. Leeds made numerous attempts to sign him permanently in the summer, but he has since signed a new deal with Brighton.

He is renowned to still have a strong relationship with numerous Leeds players – having gone on holiday with Phillips, Ian Poveda and Tyler Roberts before a permanent move to Leeds was rejected by the Seagulls. He still interacts on social media.

Speaking about some behind-the-scenes pranks, Bamford told the story of him and Phillips moving White’s car to the prison opposite the club’s training ground – and White trying to find the culprit for the next “two months”.

“Last year we had an inquest out,” Bamford said. “Ben White’s car got moved into the prison opposite Thorp Arch. He was trying to find out who did it – it was me and Kalv. Kalv was in his car but couldn’t see who the driver was.

“So he knew Kalv was sat there but couldn’t find out who it was [driving]. He watched all the CCTV cameras, asking everyone. I had the visor down. I even took him to his car, and he still didn’t realise who it was for about two months.

“It’s probably why he didn’t come back.”

White has since returned to Brighton following his spell at Leeds – and impressed in what is his first season in the Premier League. He has started all but one of Brighton’s 20 Premier League matches this season, in numerous different positions.

A right-back, a right-sided centre-back, in a back four or even as a defensive or central midfielder – he has impressed. Whether he does eventually end up at Leeds remains to be seen, with Liverpool continually linked.
