Patrick Bamford says young Leeds teammate did something ‘great’ in last night’s 3-0 win

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has waxed lyrical about Tyler Roberts following last night’s Premier League victory at Elland Road.

The 22-year-old was handed his second consecutive start at Elland Road after playing the full 90 minutes of Leeds’ 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Friday night.

Roberts put in a bright performance against Southampton, getting into great positions often and having several opportunities to score.

Though he didn’t get onto the scoresheet, the Welshman provided an excellent pinpoint pass for Bamford to open the scoring on 47 minutes.

Stuart Dallas then made it 2-0 in the 78th minute and Raphinha rounded off the scoring six minutes from time.

While Raphinha’s superb efforts saw him named man of the match, Bamford was eager to praise Roberts for his great assist.

“To be honest it was a great ball from Tyler, he played a similar one against Wolves which got ruled out,” he told the Leeds website.

“It was a great pass and it was just about hitting it hard across the keeper.”

Roberts may have come under criticism from some quarters but he’s a young player who’s still learning his trade, has great potential and has done well in recent games.

He endured a difficult time with injuries during the first two seasons under Marcelo Bielsa and has found game time hard to come by at senior level this term, but is now getting his chance.

As Bielsa said earlier this week, Roberts needs to “play with continuity” and improve, and given his talent and attitude, he’s bound to keep giving the manager food for thought.
