Patrick Bamford says Leeds have an 'unbelievable' 21-year-old in their ranks
Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has waxed lyrical about the “unbelievable” Illan Meslier.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites have struggled in the Premier League this season, and are still awaiting their first top-flight win of 2021-22.
Meslier has made a big name for himself since arriving at Elland Road from French club Lorient in 2019.
The 21-year-old initially joined the Whites on loan before signing permanently last summer for a reported £5million.
Bielsa made him first-choice in between the sticks, the youngest such player in the Premier League.
And Meslier hasn’t disappointed, developing into a keeper worthy of being first-choice for a top-flight team.
A combination of absences at the back and Leeds’ attacking style of play means the Frenchman has been really busy, but he’s been delivering.
Speaking to the Official Leeds United podcast, Bamford spoke about how crucial Meslier was against West Ham.
“This year, partly I think we haven’t had a full team which hasn’t helped, and teams know what they’re going to get from us,” he said.
“That means we have to be bang on it all the time, we can’t make a single mistake.
“Fortunately, one thing we did learn on Saturday was that Illan is unbelievable.
“Even though we were good in the first-half, they could have had three or four and he showed that he’s there to bail us out, which I think is important as well.”
Leeds are up against Watford at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.
