Patrick Bamford has reacted on Twitter after David O’Leary told TalkSPORT that he would like Leeds United to sign a new striker in the coming months, following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.
Bamford, 26, has scored 16 goals in 44 Championship appearances this season – as well as laying on four assists for the Championship title winners. He has come under constant criticism throughout the campaign, though.
He has been guilty of missing numerous chances and many believe that a better striker could have scored more. But Marcelo Bielsa has placed his faith in Bamford throughout 2019-20, even after the signing of Jean-Kevin Augustin.
O’Leary – who took the Whites to the semi-final of the Champions League – told TalkSPORT that if he was back at Leeds as manager, he would look to bring in a top-class centre-forward at Elland Road. Bamford reacted on Twitter.
“Patrick Bamford has done great, but I still think another centre-forward would be very important for them, personally,” O’Leary said. “I’d like to see them sign a really top-class centre-forward.”
TBR’s view – Is Bamford good enough for the Premier League?
Yes, Bamford does miss chances and the player himself would be the first to admit that. But Bamford’s overall contribution to Leeds makes him absolutely vital to the way Leeds play.
O’Leary is right, Leeds need a striker purely because they have little competition – even if Augustin does remain. But Bamford has a chance of starting for Leeds in the Premier League, as he is ideal to Bielsa’s way of playing.
