Patrick Bamford reacts to Illan Meslier’s display in Leeds win

Patrick Bamford has suggested to Leeds United’s official website that Sheffield United’s players were taken aback by the performance of Illan Meslier during the Whites’ 1-0 victory on Sunday.

Bamford was Leeds’s hero as he headed home a late winner from Jack Harrison’s cross. However, Meslier played a key role in ensuring that the game was still goalless up until that point.

The Frenchman made a couple of remarkable saves during the first-half. He somehow managed to tip John Lundstram’s effort round the post and was just as impressive to deny George Baldock.

Bamford was full of praise for his young teammate. And he shared just how his opponents were reacting when Meslier was producing the key saves.

He told the club’s official website: “I’m not surprised Illan Meslier was the man of the match, with every shot he saved, their players were like ‘who is this guy?’.

“The first time everyone saw him was against Arsenal and you saw how good he was then and he’s just growing with every game, he deserves all the plaudits, he works hard and is keeping a level head.”

Meslier arguably needed a big performance for the Whites. The majority of supporters have thrown their support behind the youngster to be the club’s clear first-choice.

However, he would have been disappointed with the goals that he conceded against Fulham the previous week.

Nevertheless, the 20-year-old responded in the perfect manner against the Blades.

But judging by Bamford’s comments, it came as little surprise to his teammates that Meslier was capable of producing a colossal performance that more than helped Leeds to three points.
