Patrick Bamford offers verdict on Gelhardt display for Leeds

Patrick Bamford has told The Official Leeds United Podcast that he thought that Joe Gelhardt was unbelievable as the striker made his full Premier League debut in the loss to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

Gelhardt was promoted to the starting lineup as Raphinha and Rodrigo joined Bamford on the sidelines.

The 19-year-old has been one of the Whites’ most exciting prospects ever since his arrival at Elland Road. And he went on to show exactly why the fans have been so impressed.

He was brave on the ball, producing some superb flicks and going on some superb runs. And he did test Hugo Lloris on a couple of occasions.

Plenty of Leeds fans insisted that he was absolutely superb. Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa insisted that he was not surprised to see him shine after he worked so hard for his chance.

And despite potentially having another rival for his position in the side, Bamford suggested how impressed he was with the teenager’s performance.

“It must have been on the Saturday when Joffy found out he was playing. I said to him, ‘whatever you do, just shoot. When you get the ball, just shoot. Doesn’t matter if you miss, just keep shooting’.

“And I thought until his legs went in the 60th minute, I thought he was unbelievable,” he told The Official Leeds United Podcast.

Gelhardt a genuine first-team option for Leeds moving forward amid Bamford praise

Gelhardt is still awaiting his senior goal for Leeds. But his first few performances have shown just how well he is handling the step up.

He changed the game in the draw with Wolves. He was also a wonder save away from opening his account for the club in that game.

And there is no doubt that he caused Tottenham’s defenders plenty of problems for much of his time on the pitch.

He now has to be considered a genuine first-team option. Admittedly, he has some work to do before he is rivalling Bamford and Rodrigo.

But he is certainly on his way.
