Patrick Bamford must feature in Leeds' next under-21 clash - TBR View

Leeds United will have almost gone a month without playing by the time their next fixture comes around after seeing their upcoming Premier League game postponed this weekend.

The Elland Road faithful will be frustrated to see their clash with Manchester United called off – particularly with several other games going ahead.

But there are some positives for Jesse Marsch. Any negative momentum gained from their last three results will have left them by the time they face Aston Villa.

And there is good news on the injury front. Several players will move a little closer to full fitness, with Stuart Dallas potentially the one member of the squad still sidelined when Leeds’ season resumes.

That may present a potential dilemma for Marsch. Rodrigo is Leeds’ top goalscorer. But he suffered a shoulder injury against Everton that was set to rule him out until after the international break.

It was Joe Gelhardt and Patrick Bamford who shared the responsibility against Brentford. Unfortunately, Gelhardt is still perfecting his game. Meanwhile, Bamford is still getting back up to speed after a torrid 12 months with injury.

On form, Rodrigo may perhaps be the best placed for the nod against Villa. But if all three are at their best, there is surely no question that Bamford is the man to lead the line.

Bamford needs to play Leeds’ next under-21 game

And that is why Leeds’ upcoming under-21 games could suddenly be so important for the Whites. They face Southampton, Crewe and Stoke before the Villa clash next month.

So surely, Friday’s game against the Saints is absolutely perfect for Bamford.

He does not have to play the full 90 minutes. But he is surely less likely to be rusty when Leeds’ season resumes if he has played some form of competitive minutes.

Bamford seems to have experienced some issues based on the fact that he has played so little.

If he does shine against Southampton, he has to be in contention to start against Villa. And that could be a real game-changer for Leeds.
