Patrick Bamford has told The Leeds United Podcast that he is excited about Joe Gelhardt’s future – as long as he continues to push himself to improve over the coming years.
Leeds fans have been raving about Gelhardt throughout the season following his arrival last summer. He has stolen the show on several occasions for the under-23s to help Mark Jackson’s men take a commanding lead at the top of their division.
He has recently been rewarded for the potential he is showing. Gelhardt has been on the bench for Leeds’s last four first-team games.
He is awaiting his debut for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. But when asked about the young players fans need to keep an eye out for, Bamford suggested that he has high hopes for the 18-year-old.
“Joffy Gelhardt, he’s going to be good I think,” he told The Leeds United Podcast. “He reminds me, I don’t want to say the same level as Rooney, but he’s the same kind of build as what Rooney was.
“He’s a stocky lad, great finisher, it’s just whether or not he sticks with it really. He’s young, isn’t he? So you can look good at that age and not make anything of it. It’s up to him to push on.”
It would be no surprise to see Gelhardt get the chance to make his debut before the end of the season. Leeds look to be on course to secure a second consecutive year at the highest level.
So, while there is plenty to play for, Bielsa can afford to switch a little of his focus to the future. And with that, players such as Gelhardt, Niall Huggins and Charlie Cresswell can perhaps expect a little more game-time.
Bamford is surely right to urge Gelhardt to not get carried away. But you could understand why the supporters may struggle to suppress their excitement about the teenager’s future.
