Patrick Bamford lauds Gaetano Berardi after Leeds farewell
Patrick Bamford has shared to BBC Radio Leeds how he told Gaetano Berardi following their promotion last season that he is the one that keeps the Leeds United squad together.
Berardi has made his final appearance for the Whites after seven years with the club on Sunday. He made his full Premier League debut as Leeds rounded off their first season back in the top flight with a 3-1 win against West Brom.
It was an emotional moment for the fans as Berardi and Pablo Hernandez were taken off with around 20 minutes remaining.
And it appears that many of the players were struggling to hold back the tears. Both Berardi and Hernandez were embraced by all of their teammates as they departed.
It is clear just how much the two players mean to the Leeds squad and the fans. But following the victory over the Baggies, Bamford outlined just how significant Berardi has been to the club.
“He’s the person you need,” he told BBC Radio Leeds. “I said to him when we got promoted that he’s the one that keeps this squad together because he was injured, sometimes he wasn’t playing, and yet he’s never down.
“Sometimes you get players who spit their dummy out and make the changing room a little bit unhappy, but he was fantastic. He kept the boys together, it’s just the way he is around the boys, around the group. And I’ve told him many a time that he deserves everything he gets.”
TBR View: Berardi secured legendary status some time ago
Unlike Hernandez, Berardi has probably never quite been a contender for Leeds’s Player of the Season during his time at Elland Road.
However, few players have been more popular with the fans. And it is undeniable that no player has given more to the cause when they have been out on the pitch.
Fans will certainly remember Berardi as a club legend.
Bamford’s comments suggest that the players feel exactly the same.
