Liverpool scraped their way past Aston Villa as Steven Gerrard made a return to Anfield today, as a Mo Salah penalty proved enough for the Reds to take all three points.
Salah tucked away from 12 yards to continue his outstanding run of form in the Premier League this season, as he was initially felled by Tyrone Mings in the box. It proved enough for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who spurned a number of golden chances late on as well to make it two.
One of those chances came when the aforementioned Salah broke forward with options galore. Instead of shooting or picking the right option, Salah tried to feed Sadio Mane, who ultimately was blocked off by Ezri Konsa’s fine defending.

And BBC pundit, Pat Nevin, was less than impressed with the moment from Salah, admitting it was unsusual for him to find a criticism of the Egyptian.
“I cannot believe that Salah made the wrong decision there. He had all sorts of options, maybe too many. Eventually he got caught on the ball. It’s unusual to say that,” Nevin said. (via BBC Sport)
Regardless, the win ensured Liverpool kept pace with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. The Citizens also won 1-0 earlier in the day, again, thanks to a penalty.
TBR’s View: Salah Proves His Worth Despite Late Judgement Call
To be fair to Mo Salah here, he has often been criticized for not passing. At least on this occasion he did try and find Mane to see the game off properly. However, given his form, he’s arguably best just going alone sometimes.
Nevertheless, he stuck the crucial penalty away when needed and he continues to produce for the Reds. At the moment, he is winning games on his own at times.
Certainly, come January, it will be interesting to see how Liverpool cope with the loss of Salah and, of course, Mane.
