Pat Bonner has told BBC Sport that Celtic fans have seen so many mistakes from Jozo Simunovic during his time at Parkhead as the Hoops were knocked out of the Europa League by Copenhagen.

Neil Lennon’s side have fallen in the last 32 after a dramatic defeat at home to the Danish club. The Bhoys looked to have a major advantage having drawn the opening leg 1-1 away from home.

However, Celtic were beaten 3-1 in the second-leg after conceding twice late on.

But the goal that broke the deadlock left Celtic Park stunned. Simunovic decided against clearing the ball and gifted a goal to the visitors six minutes after the break.

And Bonner suggested that the mistake will have come as little surprise to those who have watched Simunovic on a number of occasions during his time with the Hoops.

“Simunovic should have knocked it into the stand,” he told BBC Sport. “As soon as he lets it bounce he’s under pressure. It’s another big mistake from him, we’ve seen it so many times.”

It has been a difficult time for Simunovic. He has arguably struggled to realise his potential at Celtic having previously looked destined for a fantastic career.

He appeared to have the talent. But he has struggled with injuries and form in recent years. And it would be no surprise if many Hoops fans had some strong words concerning the centre-back’s future at the club following the defeat.

It should be noted that Odsonne Edouard levelled the tie with a penalty before Celtic conceded twice more. But Simunovic certainly appears to have been left a point to prove following a calamitous error.
