Pascal Chimbonda thinks Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has made a big mistake

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy made a big mistake in sacking Jose Mourinho, according to 2008 League Cup winner Pascal Chimbonda.

Mourinho and coaches Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra were all relieved of their duties on Monday, with Ryan Mason taking the reins until the end of the season.

The Portuguese replaced Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs in November 2019, leading the north Londoners to a sixth-placed finish in his debut season in charge.

However, Tottenham struggled this season, sitting five points adrift of the Champions League places at the time of Mourinho’s departure.

Spurs also suffered an embarrassing Europa League exit to Dinamo Zagreb in March and conceded five goals as they were knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Everton in the fifth round.

However, Mourinho was in line to take Tottenham into the League Cup final, and Chimbonda believes the former manager deserved more time, particularly if he triumphed against Manchester City on Sunday.

“I don’t think it was the right decision to sack Mourinho,” the former Spurs defender told the Daily Mail. “(Levy) should have waited until the end of the season to see what’s going on.

“If you want to sack a manager, you should do it two months or with half the season to go. But six games left you know? He deserved to stay until the end of the season and if he had won the cup he should have stayed for another year.”

Admittedly the timing of Mourinho’s sacking was strange, particularly with the League Cup final on the horizon, but maybe Levy felt he had to act even before the showpiece occasion.

Rumours of dressing-room discontent had been making the rounds in the press and if that was the case, then perhaps it would’ve been better to twist than to stick.
