'Panicked': Rio Ferdinand claims Arsenal man looked so nervous in the second-half against Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand says Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta panicked in the second half of Sunday’s 3-1 loss against Manchester United.

Arteta made a triple substitution on 74 minutes at Old Trafford with the score at 2-1 to the hosts despite Arsenal dominating the ball.

Within minutes it was 3-1 as Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen raced into huge gaps behind the Gunners backline.

And speaking on Five, Ferdinand said that the Spaniard panicked a bit when the game did not go his way, and probably regrets his changes now.

Ferdinand comments on Arsenal boss Arteta against United

He said: “I think Arteta was almost like a rabbit in the headlights. He just panicked, I think. It felt like he panicked in the situation.

“I think in the cold light of day he doesn’t make those three substitutions as quickly as he did. They were controlling the game and it gave United the impetus. Manager to manager – Ten Hag won the game.

“I think Arteta was super confident. He had a right to be, they’d won five on the bounce.

“That maybe built an arrogance in the way he made his substitutions. He’ll look back and realise he probably went a bit gung-ho.”

Plenty has been said about those substitutions which meant Arsenal were trying to make positional changes all over their team at a time when they were on top in the game.

With hindsight, it looks like the best approach would have been to keep playing the way they were, keeping the back door shut and remaining patient.

But United got the space on the counter attack we all know they are capable of exploiting and it is all about how Arteta picks his team up and goes again after that.
