Leeds United have suffered a blow in their pursuit for Matheus Cunha with Atletico Madrid now in talks with the attacker.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the reigning La Liga title holders are working on signing the Hertha Berlin star. Leeds have been credited with an interest in the 22-year-old by the Daily Star, but Atletico appear to be winning the race.

Marcelo Bielsa is a fan of the Brazilian and is eager to improve Leeds’ attack for the season. The Yorkshire side were battered 5-1 by Manchester United in their opening game of the campaign.

However, Leeds have made some decent signings this window in the form of Junior Firpo from FC Barcelona and Kristoffer Klaesson. Jack Harrison also joined on a permanent deal from Manchester City.

Indeed, the Whites were poor defensively this weekend against United. Yet an extra attacker could be helpful with fans confident that Bielsa has what it takes to guide Leeds to Europe.

Moreover, on social media, some supporters are fuming that Leeds have seemingly lost out on Cunha to Atletico. The Spanish giants have already signed Rodrigo De Paul this summer, another player the Premier League side were keen on.

Cunha has seen his stock rise in recent weeks following his impressive performances for Brazil in the 2020 Olympic Games. And the attacker could have added much-needed creativity and an extra goal threat to Leeds.
