Pablo Zabaleta responds when asked if West Ham could sign Sergio Aguero

Pablo Zabaleta has told JOE’s All To Play For podcast that West Ham United might have a chance of signing Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero this summer after he confirmed he would leave on a free – if the Hammers finish in the top four.

West Ham currently sit in the top four and with seven league games to play in the Premier League, David Moyes’ side remain in with a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League places. If they qualify, the summer is likely to prove interesting.

Aguero, meanwhile, has confirmed he will be leaving Manchester City on a free transfer this summer. He has struggled with injury this season and suffered a positive test, limiting him to just 15 appearances – and his contract expires this summer.

Asked if West Ham could make an ambitous move to sign Aguero, Zabaleta stated West Ham have a chance of signing him if they finish in the top four – though he believes a move to Spain is more likely. It would see Aguero copy a move Zabaleta made.

“Maybe he wants to stay in England to keep scoring. He is not too far away from Rooney – it will be difficult to catch Shearer. He could catch Rooney. He knows I enjoyed my time at West Ham, I met him a couple of times when I was there,” Zabaleta said.

“I told him that I was enjoying life in London – but I’m not sure Canary Wharf would be a nice place for Aguero. But maybe, maybe if I speak to Aguero. Maybe if West Ham get to Champions League, the way they’re playing. They need a top striker.”

TBR’s view – Could West Ham really tempt Aguero?

Aguero will want to join a side that are in the Champions League, and West Ham need a striker. If the Hammers, then, finish in the top four – it makes sense on paper for the Hammers to try and sign Aguero on a free transfer.

But the stumbling block for West Ham will be Aguero’s massive wages. According to Spotrac, Aguero is believed to earn a whopping £230,000 a week at Man City. The Hammers won’t be able to afford such a figure, and that is likely to prevent a move.
