Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed Reds captain Jordan Henderson still shuts down any title talk, despite the club being 19 points clear at the top.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have an unassailable lead at the summit of the Premier League, and can wrap things up as early as March 21 if they keep winning.
The relentless Reds have dropped points just once this season – in a draw against Manchester United back in October.
To everyone that isn’t affiliated with Liverpool, the title is as good as theirs, but Oxlade-Chamberlain claims Henderson still won’t allow the dressing room to get swept up in all the chatter.
He said (Mirror): “If anyone even utters the words ‘winning the league’ then he shuts them straight down. He’s done it externally as well, he won’t ever let himself get carried away. He’s just so driven, focused on the next game and the next thing.
“That’s how we are as a team and how I am as an individual.”
Henderson will be playing more of a backseat role over the next couple of weeks, as he nurses a hamstring injury.
TBR’s view – Captain fantastic
Henderson is proving to be a sensational captain for Liverpool.
His performances this year have been excellent, but his leadership for Klopp’s side is invaluable, and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s comments are a reminder just how much of a professional he is.
There are many midfielders in the Premier League with more quality on the ball than Henderson, but few hold a candle to him in terms of leading a team and any side in the division would be lucky to have him in their ranks.
