Owen Hargreaves says Jose Mourinho can guide Tottenham to Champions League glory

Owen Hargreaves has told BT Sport’s coverage of this week‘s Champions League highlights that he believes Tottenham can win the Champions League under Jose Mourinho, claiming Mourinho has won the competition with worse sides.

Spurs qualified for the last 16 of the competition before this week’s 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich, and had to accept that they were going to finish second. It saw Mourinho rest some key players, including Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Goals from Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho saw Bayern cancel out Ryan Sessegnon’s equaliser. It was a poor performance from Spurs, but Mourinho has claimed he has learnt a lot from his players.

Former England and Bayern midfielder Hargreaves has claimed that Mourinho – who has won the Champions League twice with Porto and Inter Milan – has won the competition with lesser sides than Tottenham’s team, and says they can win it.

“I think what he’s learning – he spoke about Juan Foyth – it’s still early days at Tottenham,” Hargreaves said. “He’s trying to get a picture of what his best team is. He knows when he has his best 11 in place, they can give anyone a game.
“That’s why he took the Tottenham job, they have a really good squad of players. I think he has won the Champions League with squads that aren’t as talented. If he gets everybody fit and healthy, they have a chance.”

TBR’s view – Can Tottenham really win the competition?

Well, last season they reached the final after a tough run which saw them face Manchester City, an inspired Ajax side and Barcelona on their route to the last game. Even in the final, they were unlucky to lose.

Keeping Harry Kane fit and getting the best out of Dele Alli is crucial. He will also need to bring in players in January, ones that he can trust and hit the ground running. But Hargreaves is right, Tottenham do have all the tools required to win.
