Owen Hargreaves questions Leeds United summer signing Rodrigo Moreno

Owen Hargreaves has questioned Leeds United’s club-record signing Rodrigo Moreno following Sunday’s 6-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford – when talking to The Analysis Show on Optus Sport.

Rodrigo, 29, has been in and out of the Leeds side with his progression into the team hampered by a positive test result and Patrick Bamford’s stunning form. It has seen Rodrigo drop into attacking midfield.

It is a new position for the Spain international. Not only that, but he is learning a new position in a completely different system that is masterminded by Marcelo Bielsa. He has still managed to score two goals, against Manchester City and Newcastle.

Hargreaves spoke of the loss to Manchester United and he has suggested that Rodrigo is yet to get to grips with life at Elland Road – despite impressive displays against Newcastle, Aston Villa and others.

“Rodrigo is new to this side, and they’ve spent a lot of money on him,” Hargreaves said about the £58,000-a-week ace (Spotrac) on The Analysis Show following the loss at Old Trafford. “I don’t think he’s got the mechanisms or the timings right.”

TBR’s view – Rodrigo deserves time, and Leeds will be repaid

The fact he is showing glimpses of quality and class in the final third shows he is a proper talent. Pinging the bar against Arsenal, his goal against Newcastle and his overall performance at Aston Villa is certainly examples of that.

But out of position and only 13 games into Bielsa’s style of play, Rodrigo deserves times to get used to life at Elland Road. When he finally overcomes that and knows what to do, he will repay the Whites for their patience.
