Joe Gelhardt came off the Leeds United bench to score with his first touch on Saturday at Stamford Bridge – and Owen Hargreaves has heaped praise on the young striker with a six-word verdict.

Gelhardt, 19, is quickly becoming more and more important for the Leeds first team this season. Making his debut against Fulham in the Carabao Cup, Gelhardt has now clocked up six senior appearances.

He even started against Tottenham in the 2-1 loss to Spurs, and it was his beautiful run into the box that won a penalty to draw with Wolves. On Saturday, he came off the bench after 82 minutes of action.

Just 81 seconds later, he scored his first senior goal – latching on to the end of Tyler Roberts’ perfect cross with a deft finish past Edouard Mendy. Leeds eventually lose the game 3-2 against Thomas Tuchel’s side.

But for Gelhardt, it was a game to remember. His first for the club’s senior side, his first at professional level, his first in the Premier League. Hargreaves said on PLP: “First touch, first goal, absolutely amazing.”

Hargreaves on Gelhardt: Should Leeds star start against Manchester City?

It would be harsh on Roberts, who has lead the line well in the last two games against Brentford and Chelsea. Roberts scored only his second ever Premier League goal against Brentford.

He then got an assist for Gelhardt, his low cross superbly turned in by the youngster. Roberts deserves to start on Tuesday night against Manchester City, but there will be no surprises if Gelhardt gets more than eight minutes.
