'Outstanding': Martin Keown stunned by news out of Arsenal today
Arsenal legend Martin Keown has welcomed the news involving Edu’s new role at the Emirates Stadium.
The Highbury icon told talkSPORT (18/11/22, 10:54am) that the news was “outstanding”.
On Friday, the Gunners announced that Edu had become the club’s first ever Sporting Director.
Edu, who enjoyed a fruitful playing career at Arsenal, became the Gunners’ Technical Director in 2019.
The 44-year-old has overseen significant change at the club in the right direction.
Edu’s shrewd transfer business has helped Arsenal grow and reach the Premier League summit this season.
The Brazilian has now been rewarded for his superb work at the Emirates, amid reported interest from other clubs.
Already in charge of men’s and women’s operations, Edu’s new remit extends to Arsenal academy activities.
He will work with Per Mertesacker with a view to improving the bridge between the first-team setup and the academy.
And Keown appreciated the news out of Arsenal, telling talkSPORT: “Outstanding. He thoroughly deserves that role.”
Yet more great news at Arsenal
With the Premier League grinding to a halt due to the World Cup, Arsenal can take stock and plan for the rest of the campaign.
Edu’s future was likely one of the most pressing issues at Arsenal at this moment in time.
Numerous clubs have reportedly been circling around Edu in hope of bringing him to their respective boardrooms.
As Edu is a permanent member of staff, he is not on a contract like a member of the first-team squad would be.
This latest news shows how much Arsenal are committed to Edu and vice versa.
