Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has waxed lyrical about Bruno Guimaraes, saying he’s looked superb in training.

The Magpies bolstered their ranks in January with five new players and have seen a major upturn in form.

Guimaraes was the most high-profile arrival at St James’ Park, a 24-year-old Brazil international and a player of the highest calibre.

The midfielder is yet to start for Newcastle, Howe bringing him on as an injury-time substitute against Everton.

It makes sense, as Guimaraes will need a little time to acclimatise to the Premier League and to life in England.

Howe, speaking to Sky Sports, reiterated that Guimaraes will start for Newcastle “at the right time”.

Nonetheless, the Magpies boss is relishing the prospect of the Selecao star finally starting for the Tyneside outfit.

“He is certainly someone we’re keen to see play,” adds Howe.

“He’s an outstanding talent, we’ve seen that in training already and in his very brief cameo the other night.

“But it will have to be at the right time to introduce him to the starting XI.”

The January transfer window was a rollercoaster ride for Newcastle fans, to put it mildly.

They hit the ground running with Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, but then the Magpies struggled to get other signings over the line.

On the pitch, the FA Cup loss to Cambridge and the disheartening league draw against Watford didn’t help.

But then, in the final two days, the Magpies brought three new recruits in, including Guimaraes.

And on the pitch, consecutive wins over Leeds and Newcastle dragged Newcastle out of the bottom three.

Obviously there’s still a lot of work to do, but things are finally looking up for the Magpies.

And when Guimaraes gets up to speed, things will be even more exciting.

Should Newcastle survive in the top flight, then the summer transfer window will be something to behold.
