‘Outstanding’: Asmir Begovic has been so impressed with 19-year-old Everton man, Lampard loves him too
The two sides played out a goalless draw as they look to take advantage of the World Cup break.
Begovic has now kept three clean sheets this season, including in his only Premier League outing for the Toffees.
It was a much-changed team Down Under for Frank Lampard, with several of his most important players on international duty.
However, Begovic and Lampard were both seriously impressed with youngster Isaac Price’s performance.
The 19-year-old midfielder did not look out of place in the starting line-up, and played all 90 minutes.
He then slotted home his penalty to help the Toffees win the shootout.
Begovic and Lampard impressed with Price
Speaking after the match, Begovic highlighted that Price has been brilliant in training as well as on the pitch.
“Some of the young lads are with us in training and they’ve been getting appearances here and there,” Begovic said.
“You can see the development, you can see the growth.
“Everton are very famous for bringing through their Academy players and I think there are a few boys here who have a chance to progress and play their part in years to come.
“I thought Isaac was outstanding today but so were the other boys when they came on – they did a really good job and helped us get the win.”
After the match, Lampard added his praise for Price, and clearly loved what he saw from the Northern Irishman.
“I would’ve played Isaac, anyway [after Davies’ injury], because he has trained really well in recent weeks and he is playing well,” Lampard added.
“Obviously, we have players at the World Cup and Alex [Iwobi] is with his national team so we are okay once we get everybody back and fit, to a degree, but I suppose it gives an opportunity to Isaac Price who was the best player on the pitch.”
Price has already made his first-team league debut, coming on against Arsenal at the end of last season.
He’s not been in a Premier League squad this season, but has been a standout player for the under-21s.
The 19-year-old really impressed Everton’s coaches in pre-season, and there’s hope that he’ll sign a new deal at the club.
Price has also clearly impressed Begovic with his performances in training and has now translated that into a superb performance on the pitch.
With Davies and Doucoure both picking up injuries, Price could make the most of the World Cup break to give Lampard something to think about in midfield.
