‘Outstanding’… Ange Postecoglou so impressed with £27m Tottenham player’s display today

Ange Postecoglou has singled out Giovani Lo Celso for praise after Tottenham Hotspur beat Bournemouth today.

Tottenham picked up a 3-1 win over the Cherries thanks to goals from Pape Matar Sarr, Heung-Min Son and Richarlison.

Giovani Lo Celso returned to the starting XI after being named amongst the substitutes in Spurs’ last two league games.

The Argentine was joined in the middle of the park by Rodrigo Bentancur, who made a surprise return after picking up an ankle injury last month.

Spurs weren’t exactly at their best today and benefitted from Bournemouth being wasteful in front of goal. But Ange Postecoglou was impressed with Lo Celso’s display in midfield.

Postecoglou lauds Lo Celso after Tottenham beat Bournemouth

Speaking to Football.London after today’s win, Postecoglou heaped praise on Lo Celso.

“Gio was great,” the Spurs boss said. “He’s been great the past few weeks. We needed someone to step and Gio was great today.

“You could see his passes through and the one through to Sonny was outstanding. We’re going to need him now because Sonny, Pape and Biss go away now.”

Lo Celso created Tottenham’s second goal of the game as he produced an inch-perfect through ball to set up Son. He also played a key part in Tottenham’s opener today as his sliding tackle set Sarr on his way.

The 27-year-old has impressed under Postecoglou after previously struggling to find his feet at Spurs.

Of course, Spurs are currently without James Maddison after the midfielder picked up an ankle injury back in November.

It’s fair to say that Lo Celso has stepped up well in his absence, with the £27 million man netting two goals and providing two assists.

With Maddison’s return just around the corner, it will be intriguing to see how Lo Celso fits into Postecoglou’s plans once the Englishman returns. But with Yves Bissouma and Sarr heading to AFCON next month, you’d imagine the Argentine will have a key role to play.
