David Unsworth has been singing the praises of Everton’s young midfielder Beni Baningime after his performance over the weekend. The midfielder impressed as Everton’s under-23s took on Plymouth Argyle and, speaking to the Liverpool Echo, his under-23 boss was effusive in his praise.
“Listen, there wasn’t any bad performances today on the team.
“I thought Beni [Baningime] was outstanding again, best player on the pitch followed by [Nathangelo] Markelo. There were some really good performances only outshadowed by their goalkeeper!”
Everton fans will no doubt be pleased to hear that Baningime is returning to form. After progressing into the Everton first-team under both Unsworth and Sam Allardyce, the midfielder soon found himself struggling. An ankle injury and a dreadful loan spell at Wigan Athletic severely dented his progress this season.
It looked as though he was on his way out of the club this summer. Denmark appeared to be calling, with the Liverpool Echo suggesting a move to Brondby or Silkeborg was on the cards.
Those deals collapsed after talks stalled and Baningime looked destined for another season of PL2 football.
However, his current form and the situation in the Everton first-team might just hand Baningime another chance to crack the Everton first-team.
Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin are injured until next year whilst Morgan Schneiderlin’s form has been very inconsistent this campaign.
The DR Congo born star was on the bench for the 2-0 win against West Ham United and will surely be knocking on Marco Silva’s door yet again if he continues to impress with the under-23s. Perhaps there is still a long-term Everton career ahead for this talented midfield destroyer.
