Out-on-loan Arsenal star branded 'inexplicable' by country's media, after mistake in 4-1 win

Marseille cruised to a huge 4-1 win over Lorient on Sunday – but GFFN have criticised Arsenal defender William Saliba, branding him ‘inexplicable’.

Saliba, 20, is currently getting plenty of game time at Marseille while on loan from Arsenal – starting and finishing 10 of Marseille’s 11 21-22 games.

He helped Marseille keep two clean sheets in their first five Ligue 1 matches – picking up four wins from those five. But he was benched for the sixth.

Saliba then returned for the next two, which ended in defeat. Sunday was a big game for both Saliba and Marseille, ending in a resounding 4-1 win.

Matteo Guendouzi stole the show, scoring twice, creating another. Despite the win, Saliba was criticised by GFFN – being handed a rating of 5/10.

GFFN label a moment in the second half as ‘inexplicable’ from Saliba, as he stopped to appeal offside. Guendouzi is even spotted shouting at Saliba.

“Solid overall but inexplicably stopped and appealed for offside in the middle of a penalty box scramble. A crucial moment in the game.”

Saliba criticised: Arsenal star shows raw inexperience, Arteta right

Many Arsenal fans and pundits questioned why a player, costing £27million, had not been given a chance by manager Mikel Arteta.

But on Sunday, perhaps there was proof as to why. The £40k-a-week (Spotrac) man showed signs of complete inexperience, a lack of know how.

Poor body language and attitude, too. He lazily appealed for offside with the game in the balance at 1-1 – while his teammates fought to stop a goal.

In the end, he had his goalkeeper to thank – as Pau Lopez produced a magnificent sprawling save to deny Lorient. Arteta was right.
