Ousmane Dembele unsure on Barcelona future beyond Euro 2020 amid Liverpool interest
Ousmane Dembele has told L’Equipe that he hopes to stay at Barcelona but is unsure what the future holds beyond Euro 2020 amid interest from Liverpool.
He signed a five-year deal when bought from Borussia Dortmund for an initial £97million rising to £135m (BBC) in 2017. But the France forward will now enter the final year of his contract at the Camp Nou this summer.
Barcelona hope Dembele will agree to new terms after overcoming his perineal injury problems (Mundo Deportivo). Yet the Catalan outfit are prepared to sell this summer if the 24-year-old refuses to put pen to paper.
Juve and the Red Devils also sought a deal last summer. The Italian giants admire his pace and believe his skilful nature would suit the Serie A. While the Old Trafford natives have kept open a line of communication with his agent after discussing a move last winter.
Spanish publication AS also claim Dembele’s future is destined to be in the Premier League, but interest from France and Germany could scupper any plans.
The forward, for his part, is unsure what the future has in store. Instead, Dembele is focusing on preparing himself for the European Championship to add to his 2018 World Cup winners’ medal.
“I hope to stay at Barca but I don’t know,” Dembele said. “There’s no rush. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Right now, I am completely focused on the Euros with France.”
TBR’s view: Dembele would suit Liverpool
Dembele enjoyed a very solid 2020/21 season under Ronald Koeman with minutes in 44 games, while scoring 11 goals. He also offered five assists and only sat out six games due to injury. That was a vast improvement on previous years with the winger plagued by issues.
Having now proven he can stay fit, Dembele would be an ideal signing for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of the Frenchman’s abilities and could refresh the Reds attack with the 23-cap international.
Dembele is not afraid to take the ball before running at opponents and has proven his creative touch. He would easily suit the English game and offer Klopp another option to rotate with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota if terms can be agreed.
